Hypnotherapy effectively treats IBS symptoms, and the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the wider medical profession recognise hypnotherapy as an effective IBS treatment.
What is IBS?
It’s the most common digestive disorder – affecting 10% – 20 % of people in the UK. Your food seems to go through your system too fast, or too slowly. This can cause bloating, pain, toilet issues, sleep problems, stress and anxiety.
The symptoms can last for different amounts of time and can come and go. There might be times when you feel fine and other times it’s controlling your life. You could avoid going out socially for food and drink, going to work meetings, or using public transport in case you need to use the toilet urgently. It can be painful and upsetting, leading to fear, anxiety, anger and stress – which can make your symptoms worse.
The most common symptoms include pain or discomfort in the abdomen, bloating, an urgent need to empty the bowel, and changes in bowel habit (diarrhoea or constipation, or both). Although the full cause is unknown it is strongly linked to stress and anxiety.
IBS symptoms can include:
- Abdominal pain/cramps
- Lack of appetite
- Mucous, slime or ‘jelly’ in the stool
- Constipation, diarrhoea or both
- Urinary infections
- Sleep problems/tiredness
- Generally feeling unwell
- Anxiety, stress and/or depression
